When the copper pot passed by with bunches under the rose… there the magic happens.
This is the custom which is connected with people’s notion about the changes in nature. It is thought that the herbs gathered on that very day possess the greatest healing power. The girls carry a bunch of herbs and flowers to their families.
Two other girls go and fetch ‘dumb water’ from the nearest spring and pour it in big copper pots.
This water is poured in complete silence; otherwise a part of its magic power will be lost. First they drop in an iron key to hear the ring from the bottom of the pot, in order to “lock” all the sinister forces. Then all bunches are put in the copper pot and the two girls carry it to spend the night under a rose bush. There the magic happens: the earth and heaven emerge. In the night people light fires and jump over them to be healthy. In the morning before the sunrise the girls roll in the green field to be healthy. Then the special bunches are foretold – the girls’ bunches – for marriage and the others – for health. An old woman gets out the God’s bunch from the pot and begins to bless, as she sprinkles water around with it. Several women take off bunches and it is a symbol of health, rich harvest and marriage.
