Roman roads, fortresses and mines

To the life in the mountain could not be given meaning without the connection with the water and the sea. Strandzha region is an inexhaustible resource spring from the most ancient times. Extracted metal, copper and iron ores and marbles also forests with plentiful wood resources for ships construction found an environment for trade and cultural exchange with the neighbor nations.

During at about two millennia Strandzha is a supplier of metal, furs, meat, meat and milk products to the East-Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman emperies. The capitals of the last two are main consumers of these row materials and foodstuffs.

More than 60 are the Thracian fortresses on the territory of Strandzha that evidence both the strong economic growth of the local inhabitants (in the beginning of I millennium BC) and the endless fights between different tribes, collisions and foreign invasions. The fortresses are massive constructions built up with large stones without solder. Such are “Golyamoto kale” near Mladezhko village, “Gradishteto” (ruins of an ancient town) near Bulgari village and three fortresses near Brodilovo village, “Golyamoto gradishte” southwest from the town of Malko Tarnovo and others. They are used often in the middle ages. Then in their insides are built up churches also. Ruins from such a fortress with church foundations in it are situated at about 8 km southeast from the village of Zvezdets.

Through the archeological explorations from the last 50 years on the territory of Bulgaria and thanks to the researches of the scientists are established three main ore-dressing deposits.

The region of Malko Tarnovo is an exceptional phenomenon. During two millennia the ancient geologists have been succeeded to find out all the ore-dressing deposits in Strandzha region. A copper ore has been extracted in the mines of Strandzha in the Antiquity and Middle ages.

The metallurgy of the copper has been marked by prosperity. Many weapons, tools and decorations are produced.

The ore extraction is considered by our forefathers as an act of violation and injuring of the recesses of the Earth. After the low running of ore the deposits are taken as wounds caused by the digging of the shafts and have been filled up with soil and stones with the hope that the Mother Earth will give birth to them again.
